Good morning, campers! I hope everyone is doing well.
So I did something yesterday. Something I've been thinking about doing for a long time. I'm deleting my Facebook account.
I haven't flipped the switch just yet. I'll probably actually do that on March 30th. I posted a note to say goodbye to my friends. Thing is, when you go to deactivate/ delete your FB account your page goes dark immediately.
Facebook and I have a tenuous love+hate relationship. For the past few years I would get a 30-day ban for the stupidest of reasons.
On one occasion FB removed something I posted. So that was a strike. Suspended for 14 days.
Facebook said they goofed and restored my post and apologized.
Then not 30 minutes later they suspended me again, but this time for 30 days.
For the exact same post!
Then there was the time where I was actually a victim of bullying and harassment. I told the poster to "fuck off and die" and Facebook suspended me for 30 days, for hate speech. Of course I appealed, but since you have no way to provide any context my appeal was denied.
So I appealed to the Facebook Oversight Board and explained to them that I was the victim! But my appeal wasn't selected by the Oversight Board.
But this latest example was I replied to someone's post with a famous line from the movie Alien (1979). "Nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure." which promptly landed me a 7 day suspension, and a 30 day restriction in any groups.
And for me, that's the final straw.
I've had it with Facebook.
I've had it with their opaque Community Standards that aren't applied fairly or equally.
I've had it with the fact that Facebook doesn't care about context when applying its Community Standards.
So what does that mean going forward?
I've relinquished my control over the 3D Masculinity group on Facebook. My original co-admin Darren and Stuart I'm sure will handle things just fine. Who knows, maybe they'll revive it since viewership and participation has waned over the past year or so. And maybe I'll be able to produce some more art!
Facebook was always the number #1 distraction in my life. My husband says I'm addicted to it but I think the fact I don't go batshit crazy insane every time Facebook suspends me is proof that I'm actually not addicted to it but oh well.
That does mean I'll be here, on my own blog, a lot more. But at least here I won't have to worry about Facebook throwing me in jail for saying Mark Zuckerberg is a fucking tool, and nothing would please me better than to see the DOJ or FTC split Facebook up or even better force Mark Zuckerberg out as Chairman or CEO.
Facebook really is the worst thing in our lives and I see that now.
Hope you have a great weekend!
